Book Review: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Like my review of A Court of Thorns and Roses, I am prefacing the following with this: this review will include bullet points at the end with my thoughts, which is unusual for my typical reviews. This is because of the immense popularity of this book/series and because I want to share my thoughts as authentically about the book as possible. 

A Court of Mist and Fury continues the story of Feyre Archeron, Cursebreaker, and her new life in Prythian as she has transformed from a human to a high fae. Learning how she fits into this new life takes time, but before long, she realizes the place she's found herself in is not where she wants to be. Realizing the calm and freedom she aches for comes only when she is whisked away by Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, to hold up her end of the bargain they made under the mountain, she unknowingly beckons him to save her from Tamlin. 

Once removed from the Spring Court, narrowly being married to Tamlin, it becomes clear to Feyre how much she did not belong there. She finds solace in Rhysand's Inner Circle (IC) and soon becomes part of it herself. With various tests and missions to prove her strength and abilities to the IC, Feyre grows more confident and determined to help save Prythian from the King of Hybern. Doing whatever it takes to save her people, the humans, and fae alike. 

She learns what it means to be a true high fae, how to wield her powers, forms true friendships and bonds, develops a deeper care for the people of the Night Court, and even deeper feelings for the High Lord by her side, Rhysand. 

Once again, Sarah J. Maas, you are a creative genius. I get it. Way more than before, I get it. The hype, obsession, and desire to read and devour this series. It's so clear now. This book was phenomenal. I expected differing views from the majority on how great this story is, but I am glad my expectations were exceeded. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to finish this one after starting it, yet I am glad I was able to savor the words as I read. 

The creativity, the adventure, the love and lust, even the mundane moments of this book were to die for. While I still had pages to go, and there's a lot in this one, I never once found myself not wanting to read it. I also rarely reread books, but I will want to reread this one at some point. I already do, and I haven't finished the rest of the series yet. 

While reading this one, I couldn't stop thinking about what an amazing writer Maas is and how I hope to be half as good as her one day. She captivates her audience like it's nothing. She creates such fantastic imagery on the page; it was as if a movie was playing before me as I read. I can't wait to continue on Feyre and Rhysand's journey in A Court of Wings and Ruin. I already know I am going to love it. 

I would give all the stars to this one, but since my ratings max out at 5, I am rating A Court of Mist and Fury 5 out of 5 stars with a 3 for spice. 

Here are some of my additional thoughts after finishing ACOMAF; there genuinely are too many to list, but if you want to know, please feel free to DM me:

  • Feyre and Rhysand are my favorites, and I love their bond. I had a feeling they were fated mates, and when that came to light, I was kicking and screaming and giggling like a schoolgirl. 

  • The Weavers House had me on edge, but I loved the thrill of that scene and its residual aftereffects, too. 

  • The trip to the Summer Court was very telling and built up well to what was to unfold next. 

  • The Court of Nightmares!!!!!! Shut up, shut up, shut up! Swooning, sweating, falling over backward, the heat, the tension, my gosh, get me a fire hose. 

  • Wingspan—I actually cackled at the first mention of it and then blushed at each of the following ones—it's an amazing unit of measure!

  • Velaris and Starfall—what a dream it all sounds like. Those were such beautiful reveals and moments, and I loved seeing the elements of care and comfort for each of the characters. 

  • The books and cauldron - such evil and horrible energy but the quests it took to find them and do what they needed were thrilling yet enraging, screw the queens. 

  • F**k Tamlin! 

  • What he helped, and the King of Hybern did to Elain and Nesta is unforgivable - my jaw was on the floor until what happened next, and then it was practically dislocated.

  • ELAIN AND LUCIEN - SHUT UP! I actually couldn't stop pacing and freaking out, and my friend Lisa can attest to this from the voice memo I sent and my fiancé, who was sitting next to me at the time.  

  • Nesta is a firecracker, and I love her. I expect something to come from her and Cassian and can't wait to see that unfold (please, no spoilers if this is true; again, I am trying to avoid any and all of them as I finish the series). 

  • Azriel and Mor - I need more info, but I love the bond between them. 

  • Amren scares me. 

  • The High Lord and Lady of the Night Court, f*ck yes!
