Book Review: Where the Missing Go by Emma Rowley
Duration: 9 Hours 41 Minutes
*No Spoilers*
I really wasn’t feeling it at first, but I have a rule for myself. I promise to get at least 30-50% into a new book before giving up on it. Because there are so many books out there that I want to read or listen to, and there’s no sense in forcing yourself to finish something you aren’t enjoying. However, I am glad I stuck it out for Where the Missing Go by Emma Rowley.
Once I got through the background information and scene setting of the disappearance of Kate Harlow’s daughter, Sophie, where Kate is now, and how it ruined her marriage and, quite honestly, her life, there is so much to keep you on edge. With twists and unexpected plot points, this story kept me guessing until the very end.
After her daughter’s disappearance, Kate begins volunteering at Message in a Bottle, a call center where runaways can leave messages for their loved ones, no questions asked. The call center is a way to bridge the gap between a child who’s just gone missing vs. the ones who have left and would prefer not to be found but still wish to communicate with family or friends.
It has been two years since her daughter’s disappearance, and the police have stopped searching, but when Kate receives a call from Sophie at Message in a Bottle, she can tell that something is amiss. Her daughter does not seem okay, and Kate is determined to find her, no matter what.
Taking the investigation into her own hands, re-examining “evidence” and finding clues leading to Sophie, she is shocked when all the pieces come together.
With astounding realizations and unexpected dangers, her daughter being closer than she seemed is the least surprising bit of it all.
For keeping me on my toes and continuing to throw me when I thought I’d nailed down the ending, I am giving Where the Missing Go 4 out of 5 stars.
As always, thanks for reading! 💜
