Last year, I read/listened to Leeanne Slade's debut rom-com, The Rebound, and absolutely loved it. So when I realized Slade had published another book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I had high expectations for Told You So because of my love for her previous title, and I was not disappointed. However, The Rebound remains my favorite Leeanne Slade book.
Told You So is a fun, witty, and adventurous romantic comedy set at a family estate in Spain. Lucie Redway, the confident, daring, and "I can fix it" main character, is the best friend you dream of having. (Pretty confident mine is even better, but that's beside the point).
Traveling to Spain as the maid of honor for her best friend's dream wedding with the best man she can't stand to be around, Charlie, Lucie is thrown off course when her armrest partner confesses to being a famous psychic, Miranda Bloom.
After losing her parents tragically at the early age of 21, she has closed her heart to love, except when Miranda tells her that she will leave Spain with the love of her life. With her grief column on the line, Lucie takes the reading from her psychic encounter to spark her next update, hoping to keep the column alive.
With the critical detail that she and her true love share a past, Lucie is convinced that she is destined to be with her world-traveling photographer ex, Drew, or her childhood best friend, Ethan. Leaving it up to fate, she goes with the flow and allows what happens to happen.
Not expecting to be partnered with her least favorite person, Charlie, for the game-show-themed escapades of the wedding week, she is forced to get to know him more than she wished. But soon realizes she doesn't mind getting to know him despite her grudge against him.
Not wanting to leave any stone unturned, regardless of her feelings, she doesn't shy away from sleeping with Charlie, rekindling an old flame with Drew, and trying to get deep and dirty with Ethan.
The week's whirlwind for the bridal party and its guests is an equal whirlwind for the reader. Entertaining us with costume parties, scavenger hunts, and even the hunt for a new wedding dress, you can't help but stand by and listen eagerly to the trainwreck that is becoming Lucie's life.
As much as she wants fate to take over, it proved to be kicking her ass. With a crazy love square, psychic destiny, maid of honor duties, and unexpected confessions, this story kept me entertained for hours. Although a bit predictable at points, I never wanted to shut it off. I needed to know if my inferences were correct and find out what else would happen.
I ended my journey in this book with goosebumps and a huge smile. All I can say is I was happy and fulfilled with this story's end. I am rating Told You So 4 out of 5 stars with a 3 for spice. The only reason I decided to dock a star from my review is because of the predictability of events. Otherwise, I adored this and the plot and will continue to adore Slade's work. Leeanne, you have a fan for life. I can't wait to see what you have next.
Because this story is only available as an audiobook, I must extend my compliments to the narrator, Bel Powley.
Bel, your rendition of this book was phenomenal. You had me fooled if you didn't read and study each line at least 20 times. Your emphasis, tone, volume, and emotions flowed perfectly with every line. You've genuinely increased my standard for future narrators. A 5-star performance in my book. I look forward to listening to more of your work in the future.
As always, thanks for reading! 💜
